Hello Sir, I think the cute ones you showed here, i.e., the statues, they are not Buddhas, they are apprentice monks.
Like the apprentice to a master magician, usually is depicted as a youngster, therefore cute.
As we grow older, somehow we lost our innocence, therefore no more cute.
I also noticed the particularities of each culture’ s perspective upon Buddha. The Chinese one has a healthy, earthy sense of humor. It doesn’t look so otherworldly spiritual as in other cultures though my favorites are the slim, dreamt Thai Buddhas. Still, I have a small carved-coral Chinese Buddha that makes me smile and feel optimistic whenever I look at it.

You would be correct. No one really knows how the true Buddha looked like, tho many cultures have their own impressions.
